NEW -  BERNINA Integrated Stitch Regulator (BISR) - built into the machine and works with all quilting presser feet, including Ruler work foot.  Attach the included 5.5 mm BSR Stitch Plate with Sensor and the quilting foot of your choice.   Achieve perfect quilting stitches with the same length at variable sewing speeds.
 
NEW - Automatic stitch plate recognition - Automatically recognizes the stitch plate once it is attached to the machine. If stitch plate is not compatible with the selected stitch pattern, needle or presser foot the machine will not sew as an additional security measure.
 
NEW - Jumbo Stitch - Resize any stitch from 25% to 500%.  With a touch, transform a design into a stitch pattern or alter existing stitches as you wish. Undo and redo steps in sewing.  With the Stitch Designer, create your own stitches by drawing your ideas right on the touch screen.
 
NEW - 3 Point Placement with Morphing - accurately moves and morph an embroidery design to fit exactly the space on sewing project. Ideal for quilting, use with scanner function for even more accuracy.
 
NEW - Helpful Guide on Screen - Find frequently requested instructions and information. The user manual and Creative Consultant for various techniques. Connect the Help Center to your personal device (tablet or smartphone) with WiFi connectivity by simply scanning the QR code on screen.

Bernina Pinpoint Laser - pinpoint position by seeing exactly where the needle will enter the fabric in every needle position. It will mark your start and travel point as you sew and embroider.
 
Fully Automatic Needle Threader - Follow the thread path and at the end just press the button on the machine and the needle is threaded.
 
Extra BSR Mode 3 - now use the BSR foot to baste (tack) your sewing together.
 
WiFi Connectivity and BERNINA Stitchout App - WiFi enabled on the 990, Transfer designs from your BERNINA Embroidery Software 9 (optional) directly to the machine, or vice versa. With the BERNINA Stitchout App, embroidery process can be monitored on a smartphone remotely. In-app notifications and real-time status updates will make embroidering more convenient.
 
Sideways motion - sew  sideways! Fabric is moved from left to right creating stitches that are wider than 9 mm. Built in decorative sideways stitches which use sideways motion to stitch out or choose any stitch and control the direction it sews in.
For example - select straight stitch and sew in a 45 degree angle, perfect for projects or dressmaking where access to certain area is restricted such as a trouser leg.
 
Stitch designer - Create custom decorative stitches on the screen of the machine. Existing decorative stitches  can be edited in stitch designer as well.
 
Adaptive thread tension - ensures optimal thread tension during sewing and embroidery and helps achieve a perfect stitch. After manually adjusting (if required), the thread tension to the thread and fabric, the adaptive thread tension constantly checks the thread tension as you sew, adjusting it unobtrusively and automatically whenever necessary.
