The straight stitch models don't have a drop feed, so the needleplate clips onto the exisiting needle plate to the cover the feed teeth.
For very thick fabric there is a Heavy Duty version - the foot has a pressure screw to adjust for different thickness of fabric. The needle plate is a screw on version for more stability with heavy fabrics / projects.
