Due to a leak in the roof, we are unable to hold our workshops at the moment.  As soon as we are back to normal we will post new dates.

 Sewing Workshops

Our sewing workshops are limited to 4 places, so that you still get the personal tuition within a small and friendly group and are held in our spacious, light studio workroom above our shop.

Your tutor is Catherine Rowe, who is our instore tutor and sewing machine demonstrator, and as a 4th generation seamstress, also runs a successful bridal, costume and historical costume business since 2000.

Keep checking back for our latest workshops and dates.  For more information please ring 0117 9778216 or email mail@direct-sewingmachines.co.uk.

Appliqued soft furnishings and clothes are back in popularity, especially in the resurgance of retro and vintage clothes.

On this workshop we show you how to cut your appliques, how to attach to the fabric ready for sewing, traditional stitches for applique and then how to use your decorative stitches to applique with.  We will also show you how to blanket stitch by hand around your appliques so you can then make use of yarns and wool to add another dimension to design.

The culmination of this workshop will result in a finshed project ready for Christmas.

This workshop is for those sewers who are confident and know how to use their machine (threading, winding bobbins and selecting stitches).  You will learn how to reuse fabric from old clothes to make a bag.

The main part of the workshop will be how to design and plan your bag, looking at your old clothes and deciding which parts to use or how to use any key design features.

You will need to bring with you some items of old clothing or fabric that you are happy to cut up.  If you don't have anything there is a charity shop next door to the shop, where you can pick clothes up from 50p.
